The Castle CP School Communication and Interaction Difficulties Resource Base (CAIRB)

We are one of six schools in the county that has a Communication and Interaction Resource Base (CAIRB). This is a unit within the school that provides a specialist education for children with significant Social Communication Difficulties (SLCN) such as Autism (ASC).

Children in the CAIRB are supported by a CAIRB teacher and experienced support staff and access mainstream teaching as much as is appropriate.  The CAIRB also runs intervention activities that children can access alongside mainstream children who might also benefit from them. These activities include cooking, social skills and music. We also have a well-equipped sensory room, enabling the children to have a safe space to calm and self-regulate.

The CAIRB also offers outreach and training to local schools.  This is done in partnership with the Devon Communication and Interaction Team.

Devon County Council uses an SEND flag to list services which define themselves as suitable for children and young people with SEND. These are part of Devon's SEND Local Offer. We recommend that you contact the service provider to make sure the service is suitable for your child or young person.

Applying for a place at The Castle Primary will not mean your child will get a place in the CAIRB.  Any admission to the CAIRB is decided by the Special Education 0-25 Team at Devon County through the process of Statutory Assessment (Statement or an Education Health Care Plan). Placement in the CAIRB is not through the normal school admissions process.

If you think a CAIRB place may suit the needs of your child, please contact Emma Cosh (CAIRB Leader) via the school office or the Devon 0-25 Team.
