Age UK Mid Devon - Information and Advice Service

Information and Advice

We offer a 'one stop shop' for information and advice on issues that are concerning you, or problems you are facing. We provide you with easy access to information and support you in understanding the options, helping you make informed decisions.

Health and social care

As we get older, we may need help with health issues and with social care, perhaps for the first time. You may find that your or a loved one develops an illness or begins to have mobility problems, and suddenly you will need to access care and support in dealing with that. Age UK Mid Devon will be able to tell you what local services are available to help you, and put you in touch with the right person.

Allowances and Benefits

There is a wide range of state help available for older people, especially those with a long-term illness or disability. Understanding which allowances and benefits you could be entitled to claim can be difficult. Some payments, such as Attendance Allowance, can be made regardless of your income; others are 'means tested'. Our team of advisors understand the system of allowances and benefits very well, and will walk you through it, step by step.

Money matters

Dealing with money matters is never straightforward. If you are struggling with any aspect of your money, we might be able to help. We can help you understand your bills, and talk to utilities companies on your behalf if there are problems. We can help you look for cheaper deals on household utilities, using price comparison websites, and even help you switch online. We offer help with basic budgeting, so that you understand where your money is going each month. We can even help you to change your payments to direct debits, which could save you money off your bills each month.

Our partnership work with other organisations locally means that we can signpost you to an organisation that can help if you are worried about debt, or if you have debt problems. The team of trained stff will treat all enquiries in strict confidence, and help put your mind at rest whatever the problem.

We won't try and sell you anything, or point you towards any particular products or services. If there are issues you raise that need professional expertise, such as Will writing or financial advice, we can signpost you to a range of local firms who will be able to help. These firms may charge for their services, but Age UK Mid Devon will not be paid any commission from them.

Local services and support

There is a wide range of agencies and groups in the Mid Devon area that provide services our clients might benefit from. These range from statutory services like health and social care, to charities, to social organisations and clubs. Age UK Mid Devon is linked in with a huge number of these organisations, and will be delighted to contact them for you. So whether you need to know who to talk to about a health issue, or just want to find a local club that caters to your interests, we can help.

The information and advice service is available to older people and their carers, relatives or friends. This service is confidential and free of charge.

No problem is considered too small, so do not hesitate to contact us. If our trained helpers cannot help you, we will make enquiries and signpost you to someone who can.
